After years of positive reviews, the Patagonia Simple Guide Pant was discontinued in 2015. If you can get your hands on a pair, do it. These simple, lightweight, soft shell pants are ideal for almost any outdoor activity.

The Patagonia Simple Guide Pants are Patagonia’s lightest polyester stretch-woven alpine pants. Designed with a technical fit and stretchy fabric, you can do just about anything in these pants. I’ve used them for hiking, skiing, backpacking, climbing, alpine climbing, and traveling. Combine it with the Patagonia Simple Guide Hoody and I’m like a walking Patagonia advertisement.

Cool Weather Hiking

The beauty of the Simple Guide product line is that it keeps you warm when it’s cool, and comfortable when it’s hot. They seem to be ideal for a wide variety of temperatures and conditions. The lightweight soft shell fabric breathes well, but is also wind and abrasion resistant. It can withstand windy summits, bushwhacking through willows, and everything in between. Plus, the pants boast a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) finish that repels rain and snow while also allowing them to dry quickly.

Skiing In The Simple Guide Pants

The best thing about these pants is that they are designed for optimal mobility. From cross country skiing to yoga parties to fall trail running to cool weather climbing, the Patagonia Simple Guide Pants give you the freedom of movement to enjoy your activity of choice. The fabric is the key component to the stretchability, but the design includes articulated knees for active movement and a gusseted crotch for mobility.

The Simple Guide Pants feature two hand warmer pockets, one cargo pocket on the right leg, and one rear pocket. All pockets securely zip closed. The elasticized waistband with metal button allow for layering and adjustability, but belt loops are also included.

Side Pocket

Patagonia calls the fit slim and they also call it technical. This just means that they move with you. I like baggy clothing, but the Simple Guide Pants fit well when I’m on the go. The leg tapers toward the ankle, which means the pants do not fit over ski boots during spring skiing missions. But combine them with a pair of approach shoes like the Scarpa Crux or La Sportiva Boulder X, and you’re ready for pretty much ready for anything that nature throws your way.

Hiking Pants

If you’re heading into the mountains, wear the Patagonia Simple Guide Pants. These things rock and they let you move fluidly in any terrain. Plus, you’ll feel extra green because they are made out of recycled materials.

I’m 6’2″ and 190 pounds. In most pants I wear a size 36. In the Simple Guide Pants I wear a 34.
