Planning your next adventure? Will you need a tent? The My Trail Pyramid 4 Shelter is a good option for almost every adventure.

From what we can tell, the My Trail Pyramid 4 is an improved version of the GoLite Shangri-La shelter. The Pyramid 4 consists of a nest, fly, stakes, guy lines, and a single pole. It’s simple to set up and light enough for any mission – especially when you distribute the different equipment amongst the group. This 4- or 3- season tent will comfortably fit 4 people and all of your gear making it the ideal option for the vast majority of outdoor adventures with friends, family, or dogs.

Pyramid 4 Shelter with Fly

One of the best things about the Pyramid 4 Shelter is that you can customize it based on your wants and needs. For example, if you’re heading out on a:

  • Overnight winter ski trip just bring the fly, pole, stakes, and guy lines
  • Bug free, fall backpacking trip just bring the fly, pole, and stakes
  • Wild get-ready-for-anything adventure bring the fly, nest, pole, guy lines, and stakes
  • Bluebird spring desert trip just grab the nest, pole, and stakes.

The My Trail Pyramid 4 Shelter allows you to choose your own adventure – just bring as much tent as is necessary. The ability to add or subtract weight from your kit means that you can customize your sleeping/shelter experience and enhance your overall enjoyment. If you bring it all (fly, nest, pole, guy lines, and stakes) the tent weighs  6lbs, 0.5oz, but in the right conditions you can shave it down to just 2lbs, 2oz – or less if you get creative! Options are nice to have.

The  weight of the tent will vary based on what you need, the season, the weather, and your backcountry parters. From ultralight missions to full-protection adventures, the Pyramid 4 has got you covered. Plus, with a surprising weight to size to strength ratio it’s pretty bombproof too.

Nest Only

Let’s take a closer look at the My Trail Company Pyramid 4 Shelter:

  • Area: The total area of the Pyramid 4 is 87 square feet plus an 11 square foot vestibule. This is a monstrous footprint. While a shelter this size will give you plenty of space, it can make it challenging to find a backcountry campsite where your tent will fit.
  • Capacity: The nest holds 4 comfortably, but if you opt for just the fly you can fit 5. That’s a lot of people and many backcountry parties may find it excessive. Luckily, there’s a 3 person version of the Pyramid too.
  • Versatility: As noted above, the ability to go from ultralight to full protection is the Pyramid 4’s best feature.
  • Design: The symmetrical design (combined with the guy lines) means that the tent can withstand high winds from any direction. The steep walls will provide adequate head room and space for your friends with a large ape index or your kids and dogs. Plus, the steep walls are ideal for shedding the elements.
  • Vestibule: An 11 square foot vestibule keeps all of your gear dry and easily accessible.

  • Ventilation: The fly features covered peak vents that are always open. The lack of zippers eliminates weak points in the fly that will increase durability and longevity. For ventilation micro adjustments, you have to get out of the tent and adjust the tautness of the fly near the corners.

Upper Ventilation

  • Pitchability: The Pyramid 4 is incredibly easy to pitch by yourself – unless it’s windy. Just stake it out, slip in the pole, attach the fly, and you’re done. In the wind, the large amount of material acts like a sail, so find a friend and get the stakes in the ground solidly.

Stakes

  • Seams: The seams are all taped and coated. It’s ready to go right out of the box, but it never hurts to Seam-Seal them for added waterproofing.

All Set UP

  • Pole: A single, lightweight, 4 piece 19mm aluminum pole adds the height to the shelter. The bottom section of the pole extends once the pole is in place and tightens everything up. Be careful not to bump the pole too hard in the night or the whole thing can collapse! There’s no problem getting the pole in the right spot because there is both floor and ceiling reinforcements. Supposedly if you have pole issues or you’re looking to shave weight, you can hang the center point from a stout tree branch…

Reinforcement on Floor

After testing the My Trail Pyramid 4 Shelter, we were thoroughly impressed. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • Intuitive setup
  • Adequate breathability when adjusted properly
  • Roomy interior and vestibule

That being said, we did note a few minor things to be aware of:

  • A big footprint means that site selection can be challenging
  • The Pyramid 4 is a bit bulkier than the competition.

Full Tent vs. Sleeping Pad

  • We are unable to speak of long term durability, but have seen no real flaws yet.
  • When distributed amongst friends the Pyramid 4 is lightweight, but it is definitely heavier than most other pyramid shelters.

The Pyramid 4 is a good option if you’re looking for a pyramid style shelter. It can be used for almost any type of adventure – winter camping, concerts, backpacking trips, wilderness traverses, multi-day national park stays, car camping, or anything else. If you’re looking for an all-in-one quiver, the My Trail Pyramid 4 Shelter is an smart and versatile option. If you’re looking for a tent for specific purposes (extended expeditions, mid-mountain bivouacs, extreme weather, etc), this might not be the best option for you.
