Gear Review: The Original Muck Boots Arctic Sport High Performance Boot
Weight: 2 to 2.5 lbs. per boot
Summary: The Muck Boots Arctic Sport Boots will keep you warm, dry, and happy in any conditions. These well-designed boots are the equivalent of winter flip-flops, once you have a pair, you won’t go outside in nasty conditions without them.
Slush, snow, rain, mud, muck. It’s no big deal for the Muck Boots Arctic Sport High Performance Boot. These waterproof and insulated boots allow you to stay outside all day in any conditions. They are a must have boot when you live in the mountains.
I’m a big fan of the Muck Boots Arctic Sport Boot. During the winter, it’s my go to boot whenever I’m trudging through the snow. During the spring, it’s a great option for mud season. I wear them all the time for walking the dog, gearing up in a snowy parking lot, plowing the drive, or playing in the snow. These things are awesome.
Built with 5mm neoprene uppers, the Muck Boots Arctic Sport are super durable and 100% waterproof. Yet, with the Airmesh lining they are still breathable too. The lowers feature a rubber outsole that offers a grippy sole with giant mud-shedding lugs and a super durable toe protection bumper. They are essentially bombproof. And while I’ve never tested it, they are supposedly buoyant too.
The Muck Boots Arctic Sport Boot are easy to slip on and a stretch fit neoprene will form to your calf – unlike Sorel Boots that need to be laced up. The Muck Boots also come up higher on the calf than Sorel Caribou Boots (my old winter boot) for extra protection and warmth. Slip them on and you’re a walking, waterproof, warm machine. They even have extra foam under the instep for added warmth. When it comes to Sorel boots vs Muck Boots, I’m a Muck Boot guy.
Supposedly the Muck Boots Arctic Sport Boot have a comfort range of 60° F to -40° F. I haven’t tested them at the extremes, but do find that when it approaches freezing these things get super warm.If your feet are naturally sweaty, they’ll be sweaty in these boots at warmer temps. I’ve worn them for extended periods at -20 F and have been just fine. One nice feature is that the boots do roll down to a mid height, which offers more breathability.
I wouldn’t walk super long distances with these boots as they aren’t the snuggest and they weight approximately 2 to 2.5 lbs. per boot. I wear an 11.5 size shoe and originally tried a 12. I found that my feet were swimming in them when I sized up. When I downsized to an 11, I was much happier.
The Muck Boots Arctic Sport Boot have a streamlined fit, which means my Mountain Khaki Original Mountain Pants easily fit over them, so they look both “professional” and functional at the same time. I do find that a full length sock, like the Darn Tough OTC ski sock are necessary with a boot that comes up 16.5 inches – otherwise my socks bunch up and it’s uncomfortable.
My Muck Boots don’t get much action during the warmer months of the year, but they are essentially my winter flip flops. I wear them a lot during the cold and mucky months. I plan for these things to last a really long time. I love them and they are an essential piece of winter gear.
Watch out for knockoff brands trying to do the same thing as the Muck Boot Co. Muck Boots are the Original and they are far superior. They also offer boots for summer use and in various heights if you don’t need one quite so warm and burly.
The Muck Boots Arctic Sport Boots carry a price tag of $154.99. I’d say they are worth the price for the warmth and protection that they offer. They do what they do exceptionally well and that’s why they are essentially unchanged for over a decade.
