The Arcteryx Stinger Bibs could be the perfect pair of backcountry/ski mountaineering bibs. They weren’t just designed, but engineered by mountain enthusiasts. Arcteryx has an outstanding reputation and these bibs live up to the Arcteryx name.

Easy To Tour In

I researched almost every technical bib on the market – Eider, Patagonia, Marmot, Fly Low – before I settled on the Arcteryx Stinger Bib and I’m happy with my choice. I know the others brands make fantastic backcountry mountain apparel, but the Arcteryx Stinger Bib seems to be in best choice for me.

Good Movement

From the summit of Mount Shuksan in the Cascades to the steep Apocalypse Couloir of Grand Teton National Park to day tours in Beehive Basin in SW Montana, the Arcteryx Stinger Bibs have been my go to pant. They are simple, well designed, lightweight, durable, comfortable, and functional.

Before I purchased the Arcteryx Stinger Bib, my go to pant was the Patagonia Rubicon. I still wear these regularly when resort skiing, cat skiing, or working. I decided to move to a bibbed pant for the backcountry. Bibs offer more snow protection, different pocket options, do not require a belt, and are slightly warmer as they cover more of your body. For the backcountry, I’m now a bib guy. If you’re not a bib guy, Arcteryx also makes a non-bib Stinger model. They call them pants.

Fit
The Arcteryx Stinger Bibs fit me very well. They are not too tight or baggy. Arc’teryx claims that they have an expedition fit, which means they still have room to layer. This makes them suitable for winter and extreme conditions.

Due to a well designed cut, articulated knees, and a gusseted crotch, the Stingers allow for exceptional mobility while in the mountains. I have been comfortable while skiing, touring, rappelling, climbing, and camping. The cuffs easily fit over ski boots and the bib height sits at just the right place for easy avalanche beacon access (oh yeah the pants also have a Recco Chip). Arcteryx uses clean lines to make these bibs look sharp too.

Skiing The 4-Hour Couloir

I’m a tall 6’1″ and wear a size large. The mediums were a bit short and the XL’s were a bit baggy, especially in the rear. See the Arcteryx Sizing Chart to pick your size.

Pocket Configuration

I’m a big fan of the pocket layout on the Arcteryx Stinger Bibs. There are four pockets – two bib pockets and two massive thigh pockets. The bib pockets are a good size for backcountry snacks, lip balm, google bags, or voile straps. These pockets can be a bit tough to access with a jacket and pack on.

Pocket Configuration

The massive thigh pockets were a big seller for me. They easily fit my trusty Write In The Rain #311 book. I don’t even notice when I have my compass, rutschblock cord, voile straps, book, and beanie inside either. These thigh pockets are always accessible and even seem to be somewhat harness friendly.

Harness Friendly

All of the pockets are low profile and do not seem to get snagged on anything. The zippers are welded and watertight.

Zips

Besides the pockets, the Arcteryx Stinger Bibs have a few other zippers. The crotch zip has two zippers. This allows for quick bathroom breaks or for easily slipping the bibs on and off – your choice.

Wide Opening

The side zips actually have three zippers that cover 1/2 the length of the leg. One is located behind a button at the top of the bib. Undo this button and zip down the flap to drop the seat when nature calls. The other two zips are available to customize your ventilation.

Fabric

Arcteryx does mountain apparel right. Their N80p-X Gore Tex Pro Fabric offers top notch weather protection. It’s waterproof, windproof, breathable, durable, and tough. By focusing on larger yarns woven tightly together the fabric has a slick, yet abrasion free surface. In fact after hundreds of hours in my Arcteryx Stinger Bibs, I only have a few scuffs – no tears anywhere. They still look like new.

Additional Features

Arcteryx made a bombproof, reinforced instep patch featuring Keprotec. This protects your pants from crampons, ski edges, and rocks.

A tight powder cuff helps to keep the snow out of my Scarpa Maestrale RS boots. They are just the right length so that they are out of the way when walking around in street shoes or Muck Boots.

Tough Pants with Powder Cuffs

The suspenders  themselves are easily adjustable and super low profile. They occasionally get twisted, but are easy to fix. I never notice them – even when my Mystery Ranch Blackjack pack is on.

Summary

Overall the Arcteryx Stinger Bibs are my go-to backcountry/ski mountaineering bib/pant. They offer the desired mobility, weather protection, and features that I’m looking for as a backcountry enthusiast. There is nothing that I would change about these bibs and they are well worth the price.
